Hi friends and family--
This year I am running the 13.1 mile Charity Challenge at the 2019 LA Marathon to raise money for READING TO KIDS-- and I need your help!!!
If you know me at all (which you probably do since you're reading this) you know that two things I've always loved are books and kids. So I can't think of a more perfect way to put my (more recent) love of running to good use in this world than to raise money for children's literacy! READING TO KIDS is a wonderful organization that hosts monthly reading clubs in elementary schools across Los Angeles. They bring in hundreds of volunteers to low-income areas to read stories to kids who are at significant risk of academic failure and are primarily English language learners. This is an invaluable opportunity for these kids to have FUN with books, to hear English speakers reading aloud, and for them and their families to take home some books.
BOOKS ARE EXPENSIVE! And so it's not surprising that at least 60% of low-income households do not have age-appropriate reading materials for kids. And having access to reading materials is a consistent indicator of future academic achievement. Kids need books to read if they are going to be strong readers!!!! (And you don't need me to tell you why literacy and reading skills are important to economic success in this country.) READING TO KIDS has donated over 168,000 books directly to kids and their families and more than 30,000 books to school libraries.
I was extremely fortunate to be raised in a house filled with books, in a family of readers, and in well-funded schools with huge libraries and, as a result, reading is one of the great joys of my life. I want to do whatever I can to give that opportunity to kids in Los Angeles who need it. Please do what you can to help! I'm gonna run so far at such a mediocre pace!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.
With love and gratitude,
